Field Laborer – Construction Department

Position Purpose

Performs responsible semi-skilled and skilled work in the location of underground cables, maintain all equipment to place underground, and install fiber optic cables and regular cables.

General Statement of Duties and Responsibilities

Locates underground telecommunications and cables.

Responsible for the placement of underground cables and understanding where to place the pedestals.

Dig holes to expose utilities.

Communicates with customers and vendors as needed.

Responsible for stocking and restocking the bucket and underground truck with materials and equipment.

Assists aerial and underground crews as needed.

Operates a trencher, forklift and other equipment as needed.

Other duties as assigned.

Recruitment and Selection Guidelines

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Considerable knowledge of the tools, materials and equipment used in the location, installation, replacement, maintenance and repair of cable lines.

Expert knowledge on how to operate a locator, skid steer, directional bore machine, trencher, forklift, bucket truck and other related equipment.

Considerable knowledge of a variety of maintenance and manual methods and tasks involved in the location of, installation, replacement, maintenance, repair and replacement of cable lines and appurtenances.

Expert knowledge of the use of common hand and power tools.

Ability to operate calculator, computer, and basic office equipment.


Physical Requirements

Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, feeling, grasping, talking, hearing and repetitive motions.

Must be able to perform very heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally; 50 pounds of force frequently; and 20 pounds constantly.

Must possess the visual acuity to operate mobile equipment such as loaders in a safe manner to fit pipes and other parts, read gauges, and make written records.

Must be able to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions; outdoor experience preferred.

Must possess the visual acuity for preparing and analyzing data and figures, visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, operation of machines (including inspection), assembly or fabrication of parts at distances close to the eyes using measurement devise, operate a computer terminal; determine the accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of the work assigned; to be the operator of trucks, forklifts, cranes or other equipment; operating machinery such as lathes, drill presses, power saws and mills where the seeing job is at or with arm’s reach, performing mechanical or skilled trades tasks of a non-repetitive nature such as carpenters, technicians, service people, plumbers, painters, mechanics, etc.

Must be able to work overtime as needed.

Minimum Education and Experience

High School diploma or GED required. Minimum of one year of experience in construction related cable work; or utility location; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Installation & Service Technician

An Installation & Service Technician performs installation and service of cable, Internet and voice services to residential and commercial customers in both coax and FTTu platforms. Troubleshoots and resolves issues with cable from tap to home including customer premises equipment, customer owned equipment and any and all cables, connectors, and splitters that are causing performance and reliability issues with services.
